You can shake sand from your shoes, but it will never leave your soul.

The tour was well run, we felt safe at all times.

Our ‘Indian’ experience, doing life and work together for eleven days has changed us. We have a deeper understanding of ourselves, of the instructional rounds learning practice, of Indian people and culture and a broader world view. Do most of us feel like returning? Yes. Why? Because this was just a taste of India – there is far more of this intriguing country and its strong resilient residents to experience and learn from.

India surprised me. It may have even changed me.
India surprised me. It may have even changed me. There aren’t many events in my life that has either surprised or changed me at the same time. Yes, there was landing my first real job, marrying the love of my life, and having a child. But nothing quite like experiencing India for the first time. I surprised myself by saying, “Yes!” before considering the amount of preparation one needs to take before embarking on a trip to this incredible, vibrant country. And I’m so glad I did!

Having the opportunity to engage with students, even when we don’t share much language, was just really awesome for me.
I haven’t done a lot of travelling and I thought, whenever I do travel, I look at schools and I wonder what life is like in schools in different countries. So this opportunity to come to a developing country and actually get inside the school as a teacher and get to talk to the teachers who teach ESL in those schools was just something I couldn’t really pass up. Lots of people talk about the Professional Learning aspect of it, and that’s just been an added bonus for me.

I recommend this experience for other teachers to do at least once in their career.

My experience with Pay It Forward is one of the best experiences of my life and I'm so glad I took the opportunity when it was offered! This experience really helps us to step back and think about our lives, the lives of others and the world we live in, and is one that truly allows us to reflect on and appreciate everything we have. It's just such a great thing when you can combine teaching and travel together.

What resinates with me from this experience is that it has really opened my eyes and given me global awareness. I feel like I have such an appreciation for history and the cultural practices of Cambodian people. Going home makes me feel more humbled and really proud to have connected with other Australian educators, as well as the Cambodian educators. I really feel like I have truly paid it forward.

I think I just kind of wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve had a big change in my life recently, so just to be able to do something very different and just to be able to see what life is like in another country. I’ve travelled a lot of Australia, but to now go to other countries, has been absolutely amazing to see what it’s like over here.
